The Cannes red carpet is a lot like the Oscar red carpet—but while the L.A. version gets rolled up and stored away after a single night, in Cannes, the photo ops go on and on. The stars this year have shown gone big. And in the case of one particular detail, we mean “big” literally. This week at the fest, some of the biggest names have selected high-drama gowns with exaggerated detailing around the hips. For the premiere of Tree of Life, Angelina Jolie set a million flashbulbs blazing with her OTT gown from Atelier Versace, in a deep, rich brown with a thigh-high slit and a gathered hip detail. Fashion favorite Zoe Saldana took a few of the same elements in a different direction: She also opted for a strapless bodice and a bigger-is-better hip detail, but her Armani Privé offered a sleeker, slimmer silhouette and a pop of color with a candy-striped skirt. Three’s the trend with Anna Dello Russo at Naomi Campbell’s Fashion for Relief show. The Vogue Nippon editor wore custom Moschino in layered white, complete with detailing on both hips. On her head, one of her many fascinators, this one topped with stalks of wheat. It seems that following cherries and pineapples, ADR’s headgear is now journeying into grains. She’s well on her way to offering a balanced diet. Up next: cheese? Packers fans, your moment may be nigh.

A lawyer for Apple did not immediately respond to a message for comment Tuesday. But Apple said last year the government’s accusation that it conspired with major book publishers to raise the price of e-books was untrue. Apple said it instead had fostered innovation and competition by introducing its iBookstore in 2010 and said customers had benefited from e-books that are more interactive and engaging.

The judge wrote that Apple had a “strong incentive” to encourage publishers to agree together on the rules for e-book sales so that its iBookstore did not face stiff competition.

The federal government has reached a settlement with three of the publishers, Hachette, HarperCollins and Simon & Shuster. But it is proceeding with its lawsuit against Apple and Holtzbrinck Publishers, doing business as Macmillan, and The Penguin Publishing Co. Ltd., doing business as Penguin Group.

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge cited the confident voice of the late Apple founder Steve Jobs on Tuesday as she refused to toss out lawsuits alleging the company and various publishers conspired to drive up the price of electronic books.

In a lawsuit this year, the U.S. government joined 15 states in suing Apple and publishers, saying they conspired in the fall of 2009 to force e-book prices several dollars above the $9.99 price charged by Amazon.com on its popular Kindle device. According to the lawsuit, the publishers were concerned that Amazon’s e-book price was too far below the price of hardcover books and Apple was concerned because it was preparing to launch the iPad. By 2010, Amazon was responsible for 90 percent of e-book sales in the United States, the judge noted.

The judge rejected the argument that Apple and the publishers were merely improving the efficiencies of distribution, saying: “It has everything to do with coordinating a horizontal agreement among publishers to raise prices, and eliminating horizontal price competition among Apple’s competitors at the retail level.”

The judge noted that Jobs told the publishers that “the customer pays a little more, but that’s what you want anyway.”

U.S. District Judge Denise Cote noted in her written ruling that Jobs had made statements that agreements between the publishers and Apple Inc., based in Cupertino, Calif., would cause consumers to “pay a little more” and that prices would “be the same” at Apple and Amazon.com.

Amazon’s $9.99 price for best-sellers was such a deep discount from list prices of $20 and more that it was widely believed Amazon was selling the e-books at a loss to attract more customers and force competitors to lower their prices.

Messages left Tuesday with lawyers for Holtzbrinck and Penguin were not immediately returned.

“With the fortuitous entry of Apple into the market for e-books, and the decision by Apple to join the price-fixing conspiracy, that horizontal conspiracy became a potent weapon for engineering a fundamental shift in an entire industry,” the judge said.

Horst Faas spent years educating and training new generations of photojournalists

Despite being injured in 1967, he stayed in the country until 1970.

"I think of him as nothing less than a genius."

Germany-born Faas won four major photo prizes, including two Pulitzers, during his career, and served as AP's Saigon photo chief at the height of the war.

"I tried to be in the newspapers every day, to beat the opposition with better photos. I didn't try to do anything grandiose. The photos were used and published and asked for, becuase Vietnam was on the front pages year after year after.

He died after suffering years of health problems, including paralysis from the waist down.

"He will be sorely missed by scores of colleagues, especially that reduced group with whom he covered conflict, particularly the Vietnam generation."

"I lived from day to day, from event to event. It was a perfect story for an agency photographer."

Speaking to the BBC in 2007, Faas described his job in simple terms.

"He was an exceptional talent both behind the camera and editing the work of others and even in the grimmest circumstances he always made sure to live life to the fullest," Lyon said.

He worked in what was then Zaire, and in Algeria, before relocating to Vietnam, where he won his first Pulitzer Prize in 1965.

"I don't think anyone stayed longer, took more risks or showed greater devotion to his work and his colleagues," said New York Times journalist David Halberstam, who once lived with Haas.

Accepting the award, he said he aimed to "record the suffering, the emotions and the sacrifices of both Americans and Vietnamese in… this little bloodstained country so far away," AP said.

When not in the midst of the conflict, Faas worked at AP's Saigon base, viewing and selecting images from his photographers to transmit on the wire to the rest of the world.

Under his direction, AP photographers captured images that quickly became synonymous with the long war: among the most notable were Eddie Adams' image of the execution of a Viet Cong suspect and Nick Ut's picture of a naked Vietnamese girl fleeing a napalm attack.

Celebrated combat photographer Horst Faas, who covered the Vietnam War for the Associated Press, has died aged 79, his daughter says.

He had a front row view of much of that suffering.

‘Genius’

Faas was injured in 1967 and later used a wheelchair for many years.

"Horst Faas was a giant in the world of photojournalism whose extraordinary commitment to telling difficult stories was unique and remarkable," said Santiago Lyon, AP's global head of photography.

He began his career covering conflicts in 1960, four years after joining the Associated Press (AP).

In Saigon he trained and mentored young Vietnamese photographers who captured many of the war's defining images.

The Material Girl’s new collection, Material Girl, officially went on sale at Macy’s today, where lines formed around the block for first grab at Madge’s affordable outfits. And since any and everything Madonna tends to bring out the true believers, so no surprise that there were a fair number of impersonators (besides those the store hired to promote the line!) shopping the racks. A few of our favorites, above and below.

Eddie Borgo may be showing his Fall 2012 jewelry collection in Paris this week, but the downtown designer is in a perpetual New York state of mind. As are his baubles, which, this season, were inspired by Gotham’s underground metropolis. “There’s this subterranean landscape beneath major cities like New York, from subways to waterways to sewage tunnels. It’s almost the real skeleton of every major metropolis,” Borgo tells Style.com. After studying these intricate systems, the designer turned out a sophisticated range of gold and gunmetal accessories that balance literal translations of his influences with strong, fluid lines and sharp geometry. NYC’s industrial underground appears on a cuff finished with a textured gunmetal plate that resembles a manhole, bracelets garnished with lava rock (which the designer intended to mimic asphalt), screw and mallet earrings, and a necklace crafted to look like a spouting pair of drainpipes.

Borgo notes that this is his most technically complicated collection to date, which is apparent in the assembly of both his Mainline bangle, a sewage pipe-inspired piece that’s fused together with hand-cut pavé crystal rings, and his Expansion Joint cuff (pictured), a mammoth piece of hardware that, bound with rows of raw nuts and bolts, looks as though it was pulled right out of New York’s netherworld.

“Grates, sewage pipes, joint connectors, and coils may be familiar to our eyes but there’s a way to make these sculptural things that are such a part of our daily lives beautiful,” says Borgo, who revealed that he plans to take a tour of New York’s subterrestrial maze when he returns next week. Of course, a bit of bling always helps, too. Nevertheless Borgo succeeds in making the mundane, and even the ugly, into covetable pieces of hardware.
